We understand that starting orthodontic treatment can come with lots of questions. Below you’ll find answers to some of the most common queries from our patients and parents. If you can’t find what you’re looking for, our friendly team will be happy to help.
What is orthodontic treatment?
Orthodontic treatment focuses on straightening teeth and correcting how the jaws align. This can improve the appearance of your smile, make teeth easier to clean, and support long-term oral health.
At what age should a child first see an orthodontist?
Children are usually assessed between the ages of 10 and 12, although some may benefit from an earlier assessment if advised by their dentist.
Can adults have orthodontic treatment?
Yes. Orthodontic treatment is suitable for adults of all ages. Many of our patients choose private treatment to improve their smile or correct tooth movement that has occurred over time.
How long does orthodontic treatment take?
Treatment length varies depending on the complexity of the case, but most treatments last between 12 and 24 months.
Is orthodontic treatment painful?
You may experience some mild discomfort when treatment starts or when adjustments are made, but this usually settles within a few days.
Do I need a referral to see an orthodontist?
For NHS treatment: Yes, a referral is required
For private treatment: No referral is needed
Can I self-refer?
NHS patients: No, self-referrals are not accepted
Private patients: Yes, you can contact us directly
What happens at the first appointment?
Your first appointment involves an orthodontic assessment, discussion of treatment options, and advice on next steps.
What if I need to cancel or change my appointment?
Please contact us as soon as possible if you need to rearrange an appointment so we can offer the slot to another patient.
Who qualifies for NHS orthodontic treatment?
NHS treatment is available for children whose orthodontic needs meet the NHS eligibility criteria, assessed using a recognised grading system.
Does my child need a referral for NHS treatment?
Yes. All children wishing to be considered for NHS orthodontic treatment must be referred by their General Dental Practitioner (GDP).
Can my child self-refer for NHS orthodontics?
No. NHS patients cannot self-refer.
How does the NHS referral process work?
Your child’s GDP must submit a referral to Shrewsbury Orthodontic Centre using the NHS online orthodontic referral system. Once received, we will assess the referral and advise on eligibility and waiting times.
Are there NHS waiting lists?
Yes, NHS waiting lists may apply depending on demand and clinical priority.
What treatment is available on the NHS?
NHS treatment usually involves fixed metal braces and is provided at no cost for eligible patients.
What are the benefits of private orthodontic treatment?
Private treatment offers:
No NHS waiting lists
Greater flexibility with appointments
A wider range of treatment options
Personalised treatment planning
Can children have private treatment?
Yes. Children who do not qualify for NHS treatment, wish to avoid waiting lists, or want to start treatment sooner can be seen privately.
What is the cost of a private consultation for a child?
A private consultation costs £150 and includes a full orthodontic assessment and discussion of treatment options.
Do you offer private treatment for adults?
Yes. All adult orthodontic treatment is provided privately.
Do you offer payment plans?
Please contact our team to discuss available payment options.
What types of braces do you offer?
We offer a range of orthodontic treatments, including fixed braces and Invisalign® clear aligners, depending on suitability.
What is Invisalign?
Invisalign uses clear, removable aligners to gently straighten teeth. It is a popular option for adults and teenagers seeking a discreet treatment.
Which treatment is best for me or my child?
This depends on individual needs. Your orthodontist will recommend the most suitable treatment following an assessment.
Can I eat normally during treatment?
With braces, certain foods should be avoided. With Invisalign, aligners are removed for eating and drinking.
What should I do if a brace breaks?
Please contact us for advice. In many cases, we can guide you on what to do until we can see you.
What if I lose or damage an aligner?
Contact us as soon as possible so we can advise on the next steps.
Will retainers be needed after treatment?
Yes. Retainers are essential to help maintain your new smile once treatment is complete.
