At Shrewsbury Orthodontic Centre, we provide orthodontic treatment for children through both the NHS and private care, depending on eligibility and family preference.
Early assessment and timely treatment can help guide dental development and reduce the risk of more complex problems later on.
Children may qualify for NHS-funded orthodontic treatment if their orthodontic needs meet the NHS eligibility criteria. This is assessed using a recognised grading system and usually involves treatment starting between the ages of 11–14.
All children wishing to be considered for NHS orthodontic treatment must be referred by their General Dental Practitioner (GDP).
NHS patients cannot self-refer
Your child’s GDP must submit a referral to us
Referrals must be made using the NHS online orthodontic referral system
Once we receive a valid referral, your child will be assessed and added to the appropriate waiting list if they meet NHS criteria.
Please note that NHS waiting lists apply.

Some children may:
Not meet the NHS eligibility criteria
Experience a long NHS waiting list
Wish to begin treatment sooner
In these cases, children can be seen privately at Shrewsbury Orthodontic Centre.
This includes:
A full orthodontic assessment
Discussion of treatment options
Advice on suitability, timing, and next steps
If private treatment is chosen, a wider range of orthodontic options may be available, along with greater flexibility in appointment scheduling.
Our team will always act in your child’s best interests. During the consultation, we will clearly explain:
Whether your child qualifies for NHS treatment
Expected NHS waiting times
Private treatment alternatives and associated costs
This ensures parents and guardians can make a fully informed decision.

For NHS treatment: please contact your child’s GDP to request an orthodontic referral via the NHS online referral system.
For private treatment: parents and guardians are welcome to contact us directly to book a consultation.
If you have any questions, our friendly team will be happy to help.
