Common Emergencies & What to Do

Below are the most frequent issues. If yours isn’t listed, or you’re unsure, please call us anyway, it’s always better to check.

Problem What to Do Right Now When We’ll See You / What to Expect
Pain / Discomfort (after fitting or adjustment) Take your usual pain relief (like for a headache). Soft foods, gentle brushing help. Pain should reduce over 3-5 days. If it doesn’t, call us and we’ll arrange a review.
Bracket came off Leave it on the wire if possible. Use orthodontic wax to cover any sharp part.

We’ll give you an appointment within a week to replace it.

Wire poking or “digging in”

Gently try to slide it back into place with clean tweezers. If that fails, cover it with wax or cotton wool.

Call us for a sooner appointment as needed.
Problem with removable appliance

Keep wearing it if it still fits, but don’t force it if it’s uncomfortable. If loose, avoid wearing overnight.

Bring it to see us; we’ll repair or replace it as needed.
Mouth sore / rubbing from appliance

Apply relief wax. Rinse with warm salt water (½ teaspoon salt in cup of warm water).

If sore lasts more than a few days or becomes ulcer-like, contact us.
Loose or broken appliance / retainer If broken, try to wear if safe. If lost, stop wearing until new one is fitted (teeth can move). We’ll see you as soon as possible to mend or replace. There may be a fee if due to neglect.
Metal band (ring) off Keep the band if you can. Rinse the area gently. Call us to replace it — important to fix so food or plaque doesn’t build up.

What to Expect When You Call

  • We’ll ask a few brief questions about what’s wrong and how urgent it seems.
  • If it’s truly an emergency, we aim to see you same day or next working day.
  • For less urgent issues, we’ll schedule you at the earliest possible appointment.
  • If you leave a message out of hours, we’ll return your call as soon as the practice opens.

After-care & Prevention Tips

  • Use wax or cotton wool to cushion any sharp wires or broken parts.
  • Soft foods and gentle cleaning help avoid further irritation.
  • Regularly check your brace / appliance to catch problems early.
  • Avoid hard or sticky foods which can damage brackets or wires.
